On paper, hit ball-bashing, shot-shaping approach has no chance at the Open. Olympic's slopes and angles and the USGA's rough should destroy anyone who tries to outmacho them. If you miss the fairway at the Open, you won't find a fluffy lie in the pinestraw from which to corkscrew a wedge.
Still, skeptics used to say that Bubba would never win, period. Too unconventional, too jumpy. But he did. Then they said he'd never win a major. He did that, too. Whatever the challenge, Bubba figures it out. Behold, the survivor.
