Famously, the national championship is meant to identify the best players, not embarrass them. But how does that apply to a 6' 3" folk hero with floppy hair, a penchant for wearing his emotions on his sleeve (especially after he dries his tears on said portion of his shirt) and a Ping G20 Pink Driver? The guy is signularly identifiable and particularly immune to embarrassment.
On paper, hit ball-bashing, shot-shaping approach has no chance at the Open. Olympic's slopes and angles and the USGA's rough should destroy anyone who tries to outmacho them. If you miss the fairway at the Open, you won't find a fluffy lie in the pinestraw from which to corkscrew a wedge.
Still, skeptics used to say that Bubba would never win, period. Too unconventional, too jumpy. But he did. Then they said he'd never win a major. He did that, too. Whatever the challenge, Bubba figures it out. Behold, the survivor.
